Crime in Sydney has been part of the city since the earliest days as a prison colony. Some have argued Sydney's population has maintained a scepticism towards authority. The Rum corps, a moniker for several successive British regiments that served as prison guards, were probably Sydney's first taste of organised crime. Sydney's development into a major sea port, with the combination of various penal institutions, corrupt authorities, gold rushes and increasing wealth encouraged the growth of a criminal element. John Newman (Australian politician)
John Paul Newman, born John Naumenko, was a member of the New South Wales state parliament and Member for the seat of Cabramatta. He was the first politician to be assassinated in Australia. John Newman was the son of Austrian and Croatian parents, who settled in Cabramatta when he was a small child. He was educated at Cabramatta Primary School and Liverpool High School. 2005 Macquarie Fields riots
The Macquarie Fields riots were a series of disturbances across southwest Sydney in February 2005 caused by local resentment. Juanita Nielsen
Juanita Nielsen was an Australian publisher, heiress to the Mark Foys retail fortune. In the 1970s Nielsen was the publisher of ''NOW'', an alternative newspaper in the Sydney suburb of Kings Cross, New South Wales, where she lived, and she was involved in a campaign against a proposed development project in the suburb. 5T (gang)
The 5T was a Vietnamese crime gang active in the Cabramatta area of Sydney, Australia in the final two decades of the 20th century. It was active in distribution of heroin in that area as well as home invasions and protection rackets and was suspected of involvement in the 1994 assassination of John Newman, the Member for Cabramatta in the NSW State Parliament.
